Vacuum bags work until they do not: the valve leaks, the plastic splits, and you need a vacuum cleaner in the room to use one at all. This is the simpler version. It is a proper fabric bag with a wide zip around three sides and a metal vent in the side panel — you fill it, close it, and lean on it, and the air leaves through the vent while the zip holds the shape. What comes out is a firm rectangle about forty percent smaller than what went in, with a handle on top so you can actually put it on a high shelf. Because it is fabric rather than plastic film, it survives being pulled out twice a year, and because down needs some air to stay lofty, forty percent is a healthier compression for a duvet than the near-total squash of a vacuum bag. Empty, it folds flat.
