Most bedside clocks are a lump of plastic with a permanently glowing panel on the front. This one hides the panel behind a mirrored face, so when the display is dark you get a flat rectangle rather than a gadget, and when it lights the digits appear to float on the surface. The clever part is how it behaves on batteries. Rather than glowing all night, the screen sleeps — and a clap of the hands or a knock on the bedside table above roughly 60 decibels wakes it for five to ten seconds, long enough to read the time, before it goes dark again. That means no light in the room at 3am unless you ask for it, and batteries that last. Plug the USB cable in instead and it switches to a constant display, which is what you want on a desk or a shelf. Five brightness levels cover the range from a bright office to a dark bedroom, and night mode drops it automatically to its lowest setting between 22:00 and 06:00 so you never get a face full of light. The alarm has an adjustable snooze and a workday mode that leaves the weekend alone. The USB cable is included; a plug adapter and the three AAA batteries are not.

It wakes when you ask it to
On battery power the screen stays dark until a clap or a knock above about 60 dB wakes it for a few seconds. No glow in the room all night.

Night mode is automatic
Five brightness levels, and between 22:00 and 06:00 it drops to the lowest by itself. You set it once and stop thinking about it.

Two ways to power it
USB for a constant display on a desk or shelf, or three AAA batteries for a bedside table with no socket. Cable included, adapter and batteries not.
