A refrigerator shelf is flat, hard, and usually bare, so anything that leaks, drips, or crumbs settles directly onto the wire or glass and works its way into every corner when you try to wipe it out. A liner changes that by giving spills somewhere to sit that is not the shelf itself. The surface here is EVA foam, textured on top rather than smooth, which is what keeps a jar of sauce or a medicine bottle from sliding forward every time the door swings shut or a drawer gets pulled out. Smooth contact paper or a plain towel does not do this; it either slides with the item on top of it or soaks the mess straight through to the shelf. Because the material is closed-cell foam rather than fabric, it does not absorb liquid, so a spill lifts off with a rinse under the tap instead of needing to be laundered. The sheets are also sized larger than most shelves need, so they can be trimmed with ordinary scissors to fit a drawer, a crisper bin, or an oddly shaped door shelf rather than being restricted to one layout. Left in place, a liner also puts a layer between produce and the shelf itself, which matters most in the crisper drawer where fruit and vegetables sit directly against the surface.
