The reason this works on a shelf is the hole in the middle. A solid object of this size sits there as a lump; an open one lets the wall through, so it occupies the space without blocking it, and it changes as you move past. The form is one continuous line: two bodies twisting into each other and closing into a teardrop at the bottom, with the two heads inclined together inside a smaller loop at the top.
