Decanting is mostly about surface area. Air has to reach the wine for the tannins to soften and the closed, slightly sour smell of a just-opened bottle to blow off, and that happens across the top of the liquid - which is why pouring a bottle into a tall narrow carafe achieves very little. The U-shaped bowl here is the opposite approach: the wine runs down the long curve, spreads across a wide base and sits shallow, so a young red is noticeably rounder after twenty minutes. It holds 1500 ml, which is a full bottle with enough headroom left to swirl without wearing it. The spout is drawn out to a fine lip so the pour breaks cleanly instead of dribbling down the outside, and the open curve makes it straightforward to rinse and stand upside down to dry - not something you can say of every decanter with a narrow waist. Empty, it is a piece of glass worth leaving on the table.

Why the shape matters
Aeration happens at the surface. A wide, shallow bowl exposes far more of the wine to air than a tall carafe, which is the whole reason a decanter is not just a jug.

Pours without the dribble
The lip is drawn to a fine edge so the stream breaks away cleanly. A blunt rim is what causes the red trail down the side and across the tablecloth.

Easier to clean than most
The open U lets you get a brush in and stand it to drain. Decanters with a pinched neck are the ones that end up cloudy at the back of a cupboard.
