Knocking a puck out into the bin never works. You bang the portafilter on the rim, the grounds go half in and half on the floor, and over a few months you knock the ears out of true. A knock box exists to give the portafilter something soft to hit. This one has a thick rubber bar across the mouth, held in a brushed stainless body, and the bar lifts straight out so you can rinse the box rather than scraping yesterday's grounds out of a fixed fitting. The base is a moulded rubber ring, which is the part most cheap knock boxes leave off - without it the box travels across the worktop with every knock and you end up steadying it with your free hand. Stainless was chosen over plastic because coffee oils stain plastic permanently and it starts to smell rancid after a few months. There are four mouth styles - a fully slanted one that is easiest to knock into, two arc shapes, and a round flat rim - between 580 and 700 ml, which is roughly a week of pucks for one person before it needs emptying.

The bar comes out
Lift the rubber bar and the box is an open cylinder you can rinse under the tap. Fixed bars trap wet grounds underneath and that is where the smell comes from.

It stays where you put it
A moulded rubber base ring absorbs the knock instead of transmitting it. Without one, a knock box slides, and you need a second hand every single time.

Stainless, not plastic
Coffee oils stain plastic permanently and turn rancid. Brushed stainless wipes clean and looks the same in a year.
