Almost every incense burner is a flat plank with a hole at one end, which means the ash falls wherever the stick happens to be pointing and you find a grey line on the table an hour later. This is a shallow turned bowl instead: the stick sits on a small raised cone in the middle, and the ring around it collects everything that falls, whichever way the smoke drifts. At 7 cm across it is deliberately small — it belongs on a windowsill or beside a book rather than dominating a shelf. The wood is solid North American black walnut, turned from one piece, so the grain wraps around the bowl and the colour deepens over the years the way walnut does. Nothing to assemble, nothing to replace: tip the ash out, wipe the bowl with a dry cloth, and it looks new again. Incense sticks are not included.
