The freestanding version solves two problems at once. First, no holes: in a rented flat, or on tile you would rather not drill, you simply stand it beside the toilet and move it when you clean. Second, the spares. The post below the arm takes a stack of rolls, so the next one is at hand instead of in a cupboard down the hall - which is the whole argument for this shape over a wall-mounted bar. The base matters more than it sounds: it is broad and weighted, so a one-handed pull on the roll does not walk the whole thing across the floor.
