Cutting boards are awkward to store. Flat in a cupboard they trap moisture between them and start to smell; leaned against a wall they slide down and end up behind the bin. This rack takes four of them upright, with the slots stepped from 13 cm at the front to 21 cm at the back so a small board does not disappear behind a large one. The 3 cm gap between slots is wide enough to take a thick end-grain board or a glass pot lid with its knob still on, which is the measurement most racks get wrong. Standing on edge, a wet board dries on both faces instead of sitting in a film of its own water. The frame is bent steel with a matte black powder coat - no plating to flake - and the whole thing occupies 15 by 14 cm of counter, roughly the space of a mug and its saucer. Leave it beside the hob for the lids you reach for mid-cook, or put it inside a base cupboard and pull it out with the boards already sorted.

Stepped, not straight
Front slot 13 cm, back slot 21 cm. You can see and grab the board you want without lifting the other three out first.

Wide enough for real lids
3 cm between slots takes a glass pot lid with the handle attached, and a thick end-grain board. Narrow racks only ever fit thin plastic mats.

Upright means dry
A board on its edge dries on both sides. Stacked flat it holds water in between, and that is what turns a wooden board grey.
