A bare candle lights a small circle. Put one inside a cage of fine wire and the same flame throws long striped shadows up the wall and across the table, which is the whole point of this piece. The body is bent iron wire in a soft oval, tight enough to read as a solid form from across the room and open enough to let the light through from every angle. The flat base holds a pillar candle or a jar candle steady, and because the cage is metal rather than glass there is nothing to crack or fog up. Unlit it still earns its place: the ribbed profile catches daylight and reads as a small sculpture on a shelf or a mantelpiece. The two sizes are designed to sit together, and if you would rather not deal with wax at all, a coil of battery fairy lights inside gives much the same effect.
